Adoptable Pets of the Month

Prestige Subaru enjoys our partnerships with local animal rescues and adoption agencies. Our area has several dedicated groups doing wonderful things for animals seeking their forever homes. To further assist with their endeavors Prestige will be highlighting an adoptable pet from one of these agencies as our adoptable pet of the month.

Adopting a pet from a shelter can be a very rewarding experience. If you are considering a fuzzy friend, we encourage you to check out one of our featured pets, or your local shelter. These animals need and deserve a second chance to show someone what an amazing family addition a shelter pet can be.

Our Service Manager got the opportunity to spend some time with this month's pet of the month at a recent adoption event.

If there was a Senior Olympics for dogs, Rudy would take the gold in every event. Even though he is 8 years old, Rudy stayed practically airborne during his photoshoot, tearing up the pavement like a teenager!! This big, goofy, 60-pound lovebug has been passed over at  Asheville Humane Society  since he came to us as a stray in early June, because he doesn't "fit" into the categories potential adopters might expect. If you're looking for an exercise buddy, you tend to look at younger pups. If you're looking for a calm couch-potato to cuddle with, you go for an older canine friend. But Rudy is an unusual mix of both, and the best of both worlds! Don't let his age fool you, he needs an active family. Rudy regularly goes on three-mile hikes with our Hiking Hounds volunteers and LOVES every minute of it!! He gets along great with other dogs and is a fan of every person he meets.

We don't want to see Rudy get looked over any longer  :'(  He is a staff favorite and we're all rooting for him to go happily galloping into his new home, with his big trademark smile on his face! Please help Rudy get his second chance!!

About Sasha

This dear 6-month old girl is a Shepherd mix who just loves people! Sasha is super sweet and is still all puppy as she leaps with joy…and will stand on her hind legs to hug her person. She's so affectionate and just loves to be loved on. She appears to be house trained.

Half Pint is an adorable, 4-year-old long-haired Chihuahua mix weighing just 12 pounds. He came to Asheville Humane Society very fearful and stressed, but has made great progress in our care. If you're looking for a dog whose personality is more feline than canine, Half Pint may be the one for you! Just like some cats, he likes affection on his terms, and isn't a fan of being picked up. Half Pint has been waiting to meet his special person since February :( Will you give him the love and patience he deserves?

You know that friend who is very quiet and reserved about showing emotion, who never talks about their own life, but is ALWAYS willing to be there for you when you just need a friend close by and a listening ear? Well, that's Skuttles! He is an adorable, 8-year-old wirehaired Dachshund mix looking for a second chance after a rough start. Skuttles was brought to   Asheville Humane Society   after he was rescued from a hoarding situation and is ready to begin his new life, free of fear and uncertainty, with someone patient and gentle. This special guy is housetrained and walks well on a leash. He also got along well with other dogs and cats in his foster home and really just needs a quiet home where he can keep you company as your silent, steady companion. Will you give Skuttles a happy life worth living and the second chance he deserves?

Just look at this face! That smile!! Those adorable eyebrows!!! This handsome boy is Oakley. He has been waiting for a new family at Asheville Humane Society since October. Oakley came to us heartworm positive, but has been undergoing treatments and is doing great! He's been overlooked because he just gets SO EXCITED to see potential adopters when they walk by his doggie condo. Here's what his foster family had to say about him:

"Oakley did wonderfully in our home - no accidents, didn't bark once, did great with our other 4 dogs (ranging in size from 10lbs up to 120lbs), and was very personable. He likes to play and rolls over for frequent belly scratches. He knows 'sit' and takes treats politely. He seems very loyal and followed both me and my husband around attentively. He can pull on the leash at the beginning of the walk, but soon settles into a nice polite pace. He LOVES treats and is very food motivated! He was very excitable with our cats, and we were able to distract him with treats, but we didn't feel we could trust him off-leash around them, and recommend that he goes to a cat-free home. Please don't let his excited kennel presentation in the Adoption Center fool you - he is a WONDERFUL dog!!!"

About Rose (In Foster)

This sweet shy Rose is slowly blooming in foster care. She came to foster care suffering from complications after cherry eye surgery, from which she has fully recovered. She was heartworm positive when rescued and is doing well with treatment. On top of everything else, poor Rose really struggles at making new friends. She is so sweet and wants to be a social butterfly but she is very shy until she knows she is safe. After she starts to trust you- get ready to meet happy, goofy Rose. She loves toys, cuddles, car rides and food! Her current favorite is peanut butter filled toys to keep the boredom at bay while she is on activity restrictions during heartworm treatment. She can't wait to be deemed cured so that she can really play and go on long walks with her friends.

Rose is an adorable mixed breed dog who weighs a slender 37 pounds. She is doing really well at house training, and trying hard to understand crate training and leash training. She really does seek to please her friends! She likes dogs but is shy at first and slow intros are recommended. She likes our cat too but seems inclined to chase her occasionally. That might be our cat's fault but we would recommend a home with no cats.

When Animal Services officers first found Bogart's skeletal frame on the ground, they thought he had already passed away. He was found alone inside a kennel with no food or water, emaciated, unmoving, and ice cold to the touch. As the heartbroken officers reached down to gather up his body, they noticed the faintest movement of shallow breathing and Bogart's sad eyes very slowly looked up. His eyes were the only thing he could move. Knowing he was incredibly close to dying, officers rushed Bogart immediately to Asheville Humane Society. Bogart lay motionless in the truck and was limp as he was carried through the doors to our medical team, who were all waiting for him, ready to spring to action. Even though the outlook was tremendously bleak for this poor soul, our entire medical team didn't hesitate, and poured all efforts into bringing Bogart back from the brink.

Bogart's temperature was so low, it didn't even register on the thermometer. He was given heat support, IV fluids, sugar supplements and lots of TLC. It took a team of five staff members working constantly over a two hour period before we got a temperature to finally register on the thermometer. An hour after that, Bogart lifted his head for the first time, his trusting eyes looking up at the people who were saving his life.
By the end of the day, Bogart was able to sit up on his own and willing to take small amounts of food. He went to REACH overnight to make sure he remained stable. By morning, Bogart took his first wobbly steps and even sat politely for food! Over the next couple of days, Bogart began passing gravel in his stool… clearly all he'd eaten in a while. It was heartbreaking. But, even though he was still weak and would fall down at times, he kept getting back up. He kept fighting.
Fast forward three months later… After constant care from our amazing medical team and devoted foster parents, Bogart is finally ready for adoption! He has gained over 20 pounds and his bloodwork is now perfect! He has been LOVING all the attention and his foster parents say he is very sweet, house trained, and seems to enjoy other animals. He tried to make friends with the resident cats, but they weren't impressed! He will play fetch and gets very excited about squeaky toys. Bogart played well with children in the home and loves to cuddle like a lap dog.
Will you give Bogart his second chance? To see what a life worth living is all about, as a cherished member of the family?

Meet Sammy, a handsome 2-year old Bassett/Lab mix who loves people. He really enjoys his walks and investigating all the interesting scents along his route. In spite of his being a dear, sweet boy, Sammy does have one problem and that's not liking to be left alone because he suffers from separation anxiety. He will need a home where there's at least one person home with or another dog to keep him company. Sammy is semi-housebroken

Charlie's Angels Animal Rescue Adoption Center is located at 5526 Hendersonville Rd, Fletcher, NC 28732. For more information email us at Adopt@wncanimalrescue.org or visit our website at http://www.charliesangelsanimalrescue.com/adoption-process

Meet beautiful Chiyo! He is such a handsome sweet kitty. Chiyo is a little bit shy at first, but does come out of his shell once he feels comfortable with you and will smother you in head bunts and love! Like most cats, he just wants to do things at his speed, as he feels safe and begins trusting. Because of this he would do better in a home without young children or lots of activity. Chiyo is enjoying life at his foster's business. He can be visited and adopted directly from there.

Please email forestlawncandler@yahoo.com for more information on this wonderful cat and to schedule a visit!

This handsome, freckled-nose fellow is Leonard, and he is a big ol' sweet-as-can-be lover boy! At five years old, Leonard came to  Asheville Humane Society when his family had to move away and couldn't take him along. In his previous home, Leonard lived with other cats, dogs and children, getting along just peachy with everyone! At nearly fifteen pounds, Leonard also has lots of love to give. If you're looking for an all-around great kitty, stop by our Adoption Center at 14 Forever Friend Lane to meet this golden boy!

ABOUT COCO

Coco is a fun-loving, and very exuberant, 50-pound, 8-month old Lab/Hound mix puppy. Because there is so much puppy still in him, he's in need of training to get him to walk calmly on a leash and to not pull when being walked….he's very strong; and, to not jump up on people. He also chases cars and this will have to be corrected with training as well. He is not housebroken. Coco will be worth the effort as he is a sweet boy and simply loves life! He gets along well with other dogs

Our featured pet for this month is Chopper:

Meet Chopper! This handsome boy is part Chocolate Lab (that sweet face!!) and part Hound (those adorable ears!!) who came to   Asheville Humane Society   when his previous people were no longer able to keep him. He has enjoyed playing with other doggie friends here at the Adoption Center. Chopper is a large boy weighing 83 pounds, so he has lots of love to give! He also enjoys going for walks and LOVES his toys. Chopper has such a sweet personality and loves meeting new people.   Any Lab or Hound lovers out there to give this sweet boy a loving home??

December 2016

Don't these soulful eyes just melt your heart?? Zaire is a 12-year-old Coonhound mix who was found on his own as a stray. This sweet boy is one of the staff favorites around Asheville Humane Society's Adoption Center. He has played well with other dogs during doggie playgroups and loves people. He had a dental while in our care, so Zaire now has a healthy mouth with clean, pearly whites :) Zaire has such a kind, loving personality, and while he may be 60 pounds, he tries his best to be a lap dog! Zaire would love to celebrate the season with a family of his very own. We think this senior sweetheart deserves a second chance in his golden years, don't you agree?

Sweet Dixie is a 38-pound, 3-year old, female Lab /Retriever/Shepherd mix with a gorgeous brindle coat. She is fantastic with other dogs, craves human attention and soaks it up with anyone who comes near her. She knows fetch and plays great with kids. Dixie is a lovely, lovely girl.

November 2016

Bryson is The Perfect Dog! He's just under a year old and appears to be a Golden Retriever/Labrador Retriever/Hound mix. He gets along well with other dogs and doesn't feel the need to bark at them in public. At adoption events, he has been very gentle greeting children, dogs, and every person who stopped to say hello. He walks well on a leash without pulling but does like to stop and smell the scents along the way. Although he enjoys toys and play time with other dogs, he does settle down well and has a generally calm and laid back personality. Bryson jumps willingly into his crate for a ride in the car. He has learned to sit for a treat and seems eager to please so would probably do well learning new commands. He is an extremely sweet, gentle, handsome and loving boy hoping to find his forever family very, very soon!

Our featured pet for November is Norse! His glamour shot is attached, as well as a cute photo with one of our volunteers who recently took him out to Bent Creek   on a Hiking Hounds outing. Norse is an energetic 2-year-old Labrador mix   who makes a great hiking buddy! He has also done well during doggie playgroups at our Adoption Center.

This cutie loves to play and REALLY loves to dive into our kiddie pool for some splashing and good times. He knows basic commands and loves   yummy cheese! Norse would love to have an active family that wants a playful dog who can keep up with a busy lifestyle. Could   you be his new family?

If you are interested in adopting this little cutie, please contact adoptions@ashevillehumane.org

Meet Midas! Though, a better name for this little guy would be Turbo. This kitten is supercharged! Only three legs? Yup, but it doesn't stop this guy from being a speed racer. Midas is a little shy at first, but after getting his leg severely injured in a car engine, who could blame him for being cautious? Once he warms up to you he will be your best playtime buddy! Midas has a soft, cuddly side as well. He would often yell at us as if to say, "Hey, I need some lovin'" and would snuggle into our arms for some cuddles. Midas held his own with our 5 kitten-savvy adult cats, but it was overwhelming at times. He would do well with a feline playmate, but perhaps closer to his own size. I would not think Midas would do well in a home with a dog unless the dog had impeccable manners with cats. He has excellent litter box habits and can cover his business with one paw… he relies on a strong core and great balance. Midas can jump and climb, but needs some practice and time to adjust in new spaces. We love this little guy and know he will make a fantastic feline addition to your home.

Midas is in a foster home. If you are interested in adopting this little cutie, please contact adoptions@ashevillehumane.org

Do NOT miss the opportunity to meet this precious, affectionate boy! He's absolutely amazing! Black Jack is a 43-lb., 1-year old Shar Pei mix who is still all puppy! He absolutely loves to play…whether it's with a person or just by himself! He gets along with other dogs and does seem to be somewhat submissive around them. He adores people and is very kissy, so be prepared for (and be okay with) a bath when you're with him. It's a part of how he shows his affection. He's longing for someone to love, to love him back, and to play. Black Jack is Mr. Personality and just adorable!

Reese is four years old and weighs eight lbs. He is not outgoing at first meeting him and has to warm up to you. He will not be for a family with small children and needs an adult home only. He is fine with other dogs, not sure about cats and loves car rides and walks. He will be the most faithful companion for the right person. He is neutered and up to date on all vetting.

Charlie's Angels Animal Rescue Adoption Center is located at 5526 Hendersonville Rd, Fletcher, NC 28732. For more information contact us at 828-885-DOGS or email Adopt@wncanimalrescue.org.

Many animals come to Asheville Humane Society malnourished and some severely underweight by the time they arrive at our doors. Some have been strays, living on their own and finding meager meals wherever they could. Others are rescued from situations of neglect. This is Cheezit, a 5-year-old Shepherd mix who came to us after she was found wandering the streets. Her body was in very poor condition, with missing hair, inflamed skin and all of her ribs showing. Thanks to lots of TLC from our staff who gave her plenty of nutritious, high-quality food, Cheezit is looking so much better after just two months!

Canned food donations from our supporters help animals like Cheezit regain their strength and heal. Food donations for both cats and dogs are graciously accepted year-round, as we always have animals in need of both love and full bellies!

If you have room in your heart and home for a sweet girl like Cheezit, she would love to see what the good life is all about with a family of her very own! :)

Trish came to Asheville Humane Society as a stray and is the sweetest dog ever! At 7 years old, she is a friendly, trusting, and loving Beagle mix. After her eye surgery, she started to feel much better and became visibly happier and more energetic. Trish loves to be petted and enjoys any attention you give her. When she gets visitors at her doggie condo, she runs right up to the front wagging her tail, eager to interact and make friends. She is also very cooperative for her bath and brushing. Trish has a lot of love to give and is ready to meet her new family. Come meet her at 14 Forever Friend Lane!!

(Must Adopt As Pair)

These gorgeous Daschunds are 7-years old and a bonded pair which means they were raised together, do not ever want to be apart from one another, and their forever family has to make a lifetime commitment to never separate them. Hershey is, of course, the chocolate colored boy and is much shyer than Miss Piggy. He relies on her totally and does not do well if they're apart, even for a few minutes. He, especially, needs to be treated with patience and gentleness. Miss Piggy is very outgoing, loves to snuggle and cuddle, and is such a happy, sweet girl. She just loves everyone she meets. This precious pair is looking for a family give them the love and security they're looking for so badly. They cannot go to a home with children if they are younger than 14.

This 1-year old, 51-pound, Boxer-mix is a fabulous boy with an amazing personality! He is sweet and loving and gets along well with other dogs. (He doesn't care for cats, though, so needs home with no kitties!). Chance has just gone through treatment for heartworms so will need to be limited to only mild activity for the next 4-months. From 4 to 6-months post-treatment, he can have moderate activity. He is house-trained and looking for a family who will take him on walks and give him the life of fun and loving he deserves.

Annalise is a 6-year-old long-haired beauty! She came to Asheville Humane Society back in January after her previous family unfortunately could not find pet-friendly housing, which is a growing problem here in Buncombe County. Annalise was very sweet when she first arrived, but life in the busy Adoption Center started to cause her stress. Then she became depressed and not herself, so we moved her into a foster home where she could relax. Annalise blossomed in a home environment! She enjoys keeping her humans company, but isn't demanding about seeking affection. Annalise is now back at our Adoption Center, but resting comfortably in a staff member's quiet office, where she is relaxed and comfortable. Do you have room in your heart and home for this lovely lady? Come meet her at 14 Forever Friend Lane!

June 2016

Merlin is a loving 5-year-old cat who has no problems climbing into your arms to cuddle. With his sweet, loving nature you quickly forget that he is partially blind in both eyes. Even though his vision is limited, he doesn't let any obstacle stand in his way and learns his surroundings quickly, but does need to be an indoor-only cat. Merlin is ready for a family with a big heart to provide him with endless love. Won't you come meet him at 14 Forever Friend Lane?

Also the Asheville Humane Society is having an adoption special for the entire month of June. It's National Adopt-a-Cat Month, and all cats over six months old will have $10 adoption fees all month long.

This Prestige Adoptable Pet of the month is Dolly, from Charlie's Angels. Our Service Manager was recently Dolly's handler at an adoption event and he wrote the following:

Dolly is an energetic and very sweet girl. She is young, about a year and a half, so she loves to play and run but she behaved exceptionally on the 30 minute car rides to and from the adoption event. She loves to be petted and is very affectionate. There were some very small puppies at the adoption event and Dolly was wonderful with them. She nuzzled and played with them but was reserved and very gentle. She is a medium sized dog (my guess is that she weighs about 50 lbs.) She would be an amazing addition to any family.

My name is Wingman! I'm a one-year-old Shepherd mix who came to Asheville Humane Society back in January, over 4 months ago now. My front legs/elbows were deformed and I couldn't walk well and was in pain. These nice people gave me a soft bed, food, something for pain and lots of toys. Then they contacted other people to help, and with surgery, they made it possible for me to walk again!! I won't be able to go hiking with you, but I enjoy being out and about watching people and other dogs. I am a happy boy and am looking for a home where folks don't mind that my front legs don't quite work like other dog's legs do. My foster mom thinks I'm very sweet and if you come meet me, I think you will too!

ADOPTED!!!!!!

Sweet Sylvia desperately deserves a second chance. At 7 years old, she spent her life before coming to Asheville Humane Society living under a porch outside, tied by a short length of rope. Sylvia had some rope burn and missing hair from the years of wearing it around her neck. Now, thankfully, she has the chance to have a better life!

Sylvia is around 35 pounds and is calm and shy, but warms up quickly when she is shown kindness. She has also played well with other dogs here. The hustle and bustle of the Adoption Center is starting to be stressful to this sweet, sensitive girl who has been with us since early February, so we would love to see her head home soon with a new family to love! Will you show Sylvia what the good life is like?? Come meet her at 14 Forever Friend Lane!

Kirby is a 50-lb, 2-year old lab/pit mix, who had a rough start in life.  When we rescued him from a local shelter, it soon became obvious he had a major problem with one of his back legs.  His lack of mobility, and the pain associated with his injury or birth defect, made Kirby very shy and withdrawn. He spent many hours hiding underneath his bed and considered most everyone a stranger. After a trip to the amazing Dr. Crouch at Western Carolina Veterinary Surgery in Arden, he was diagnosed with a severe patellar luxation, which was surgically repaired a short time later.  Following his surgery, Kirby went into a foster home to begin his recovery and rehabilitation.

After a year, Kirby is 100% physically and he's no longer shy and afraid.  He loves being active, but also enjoys snuggling on the couch.  Kirby is fine with other dogs, but would do best with small dogs.  He has also lived with cats.  Kirby loves kids, but may be a little to energetic for toddlers, so we recommend older children.  Kirby will need to maintain a healthy weight and stick to a grain-free, restricted ingredient diet with joint supplements the rest of his life to hopefully prevent the early onset of arthritis in his surgically repaired leg.  He has no other restrictions and would make a wonderful, lifelong companion.

From Charlie's Angels website:

Gorgeous Selene is a very playful 52-pound, 12 to 18-month old Lab/Hound mix looking for an energetic family. She enjoys going on long walks but is very strong and does pull on her leash. She loves other dogs, doesn't bark much, is laid back and is very affectionate.

Our Service Manager said the following: "I was Selene's handler at a recent adoption event. She is a strong, energetic girl but obeys well. She apparently has experience riding in cars as she was very well behaved while in the Subaru. She loved playing tug of war and wrestling with the other dogs there. She has a very sweet demeanor and a great personality."
